Updated: Apr 2

Are you ready to dive into the extraordinary world of the Olympic Games? From unexpected cancellations to thrilling competitions, the Olympics have seen it all. Here are some captivating facts to pique your curiosity:

1. Have the Olympic Games ever been canceled or postponed?

Yes, indeed! In 2020, the Tokyo Olympics were postponed due to the Covid-19 pandemic and rescheduled for 2021. Interestingly, this isn't the first time the Games have faced such a fate. World War I and  II led to the cancellation of several editions, including Berlin in 1916 and Tokyo in 1940 and 1944.

2. It's not all about sports at the Olympics!

From 1912 to 1948, art was also part of the Olympic program. Known as the "Pentathlon of the Muses," this artistic competition comprised five events, including architecture, sculpture, music, painting, and literature, all revolving around sports or the Olympic Games.

3. Why are the Olympics held every four years?

Dating back to ancient Greece, where sports competitions at Olympia occurred every four years, known as "Olympiads." This tradition carried over into the modern era, with Pierre de Coubertin initiating the modern Olympics in 1896, maintaining the four-year cycle.

4. The king of the jungle at the Olympics!

Before becoming the iconic Tarzan on the silver screen, Johnny Weissmuller was an Olympic swimming champion. He secured gold medals at the 1924 Paris Olympics and the 1928 Amsterdam Olympics, adding another dimension to his legendary status.

5. Which sport was removed from the Olympics?

Throughout Olympic history, several sports have been dropped, ranging from rope climbing and underwater swimming to pigeon shooting (yes, real pigeons!) and dueling with wax bullets. Times have certainly changed!

6. The Paralympic flame takes a different route!

Unlike the Olympic flame, which starts in Greece, the Paralympic flame is ignited in the UK, specifically from Stoke Mandeville. This town, just north of London, holds historical significance as the birthplace of the Stoke Mandeville Games, which later evolved into the Paralympic Games.

7. Which country has never participated in the Olympics?

The Vatican has never sent a delegation to the Olympics, but there's potential for change. With talks of establishing a National Olympic Committee, who knows what the future holds?

8. Sharks barred from the Olympics!

During the Sydney Olympics in 2000, athletes participating in the triathlon had an unusual concern – sharks! To prevent any unwanted encounters, divers equipped with devices emitting electrical impulses accompanied them, ensuring a safe competition.

9. Who holds the record for the most Olympic medals?

Michael Phelps, the American swimmer, reigns supreme with an astonishing 28 Olympic medals (23 gold, 3 silver, and 2 bronze), earned across four Olympic Games from Athens 2004 to Rio 2016.
